In the spring of 2019 I was flattered to be approached by actor, improviser, improviser, podcaster, and fellow Calgarian Lindsay Mullan about working together on a short film. I had been a fan of Lindsay’s since seeing her at the Loose Moose Theatre Company when we were both teenagers, and rediscovered her when I moved to Toronto in 2016 and saw her perform in a Second City Mainstage show.
Lindsay had written very personal short film, and was looking for an experienced filmmaker to help bring it to life. Although I was at the end of a busy creative streak— making Bellingham, Main Squeeze, Casey, and Hopelessness in the span of 9 months— I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to work with Lindsay. So I jumped in to co-produce and direct the piece, which also stars Canadian film favourite Dan Beirne.
The opening scene of the film might be the most impactful and attention-grabbing I’ve ever shot, and calls to mind my 2012 short Jerk— if any of y’all remember that. The movie also has a bunch of great physical comedy, some really tender internalized moments, and a terrific extended dialogue scene between Lindsay and Dan.
We just finished post-production, and hope to have a festival premiere sometime in the spring.
